FEMA chief Deanne Criswell is urging the public to plan ahead for hurricane season.

Criswell made the comment on Monday at the annual National Hurricane Conference in progress in Tallahassee, Florida.

She recently toured tornado-ravaged towns in Mississippi and Arkansas.

Criswell said FEMA is ready to put resources in position prior to hurricane threats and the planning includes talking with energy providers.

The official start date of Atlantic hurricane season is June 1.
